MetroHealthAnesthesia The Department

The Anesthesiology Department of Case Western Reserve University's MetroHealth Medical Center Campus provides 24 hour coverage for surgical procedures, obstetrical anesthesia, emergency resuscitations and pain management. Approximately 14,000 anesthetic procedures are performed each year in the Main and Ambulatory Operating Rooms with an additional 3,000 anesthetic procedures performed in the Obstetrical Unit.

To promote efficient and rapid patient care, the operating rooms are located adjacent to the emergency room and the surgical intensive care unit. Two anesthesiologisy staff members are in-house every night to ensure solid coverage for the residents on call.

MetroHealth residents treat unstable, critically ill and massively injured patients. Residents attain a high level of knowledge and confidence from frequent exposure to complex situations, yet training experience is balanced with routine cases. Despite intense training, the department staff maintains a relaxed atmosphere. Such an environment fosters openness and trust which, in turn, transcends "rank" within the department.

Aside from extensive "hands-on" experience, MetroHealth residents benefit from a strong didactic program, a multitude of research opportunities and the expertise of a devoted staff. The department is comprised of faculty anesthesiologists, residents, certified registered nurse anesthetists and anesthesiologist assistants.
